Title: Eight Grade Bites
(The Chronicle of Vladimir Tod #1)
Author: Heather Brewer
Junior high really sucks for thirteen-year-old Vladimir Tod.Vladimir doesn't have much to look forward to in school. With a skinny and pale face he is always the subject of bullies. The principal eyes him constantly and his crush, Meredith, probably likes his more popular friend, Henry. When their well liked teacher, Mr. Craig gone missing, Mr.Otis became the substitute teacher. Having to keep up with the nosy and suspicious substitute teacher who seems to know who or what, Vladimir is. Vlad needs to remember the painful memories of the past and learn about the vampire world he never knew existed before while battling the painful urge to cry after the tragic death of his parents.
Bullies harass him, the principal is dogging him, and the girl
he likes prefers his best friend. Oh, and Vlad has a secret: his
mother was human, but his father was a vampire. With no idea of
the extent of his powers, Vlad struggles daily with his blood cravings
and his enlarged fangs. When a substitute teacher begins to question hima little too closely, Vlad worries that his cover is about to be blown. But then he faces a much bigger problem: hes being hunted by a vampire killer.
Henry is Vlad's best friend who knows Vlad's secret. Vlad could read Henry's mind after he bite Henry when he was 8 years old. Though I believe, that was all an unintended incident as now they are best friend. I love Henry for his loyalty and are always there when Vlad need him. Throughout the book Vlad are figuring out his powers and he lives with his beloved aunt Nelly. Aunt Nelly prepares his lunch for school and sneak in some blood pills that burst when you bite into it. Vlad often drink blood from the hospital blood bag that her aunt took from the hospital. But don't worry. The blood that she took are all nearing the expiring date anyway. I cringe whenever he is drinking the blood because the way he describe it like it was just like some typical chocolate milk we drink with marshmallows. I don't want to even imagine how the blood taste like.
Overall, I love this book. Since most of the story is from Vlad point of view, I can see the view of perspective from a vampire. This is the first series of the book and with many questions unanswered you will start hunting for the second book to know how Grade 9 is going to be for Vlad.
